ENGINE BUILDING

As a youth and teenager I was seriously in to motorbikes, spending a good deal of my non-work time maintaining, building, modifying and riding them. A couple of seriously nasty accidents caused me to reconsider where I was headed.

My cousin had just started racing in the Mini Seven club Mini Miglia class, and suggested that if I was at a loose-end I should go with him to race meetings. Having an extra pair of hands that knew one end of a spanner from the other would prove useful.

Having always been slightly (ahem!) competitive, after watching a few races the inevitable happened... I thought 'I can do better than that'. I bought a complete car and trailer, lock stock and barrel to have a go at the end of one season. The bug bit deep. For the next season I built my first racing Mini.

The first full season saw me do quite well, with excellent reliability. But I wanted more speed. Talking to the guys at the sharp end of the field netted little as they gave little away. The guys at the tail end would talk to you all day... but they were mainly at the back for good reason. I learned precious little from them.
The midfield were a mix of drivers that paid for engine builds, and a few that did their own. Though helpful, their knowledge was limited. So I set too to teach myself all I could about building engines and making them competitive. I read books, attended a couple of lectures, and talked to professional engine builders not associated with the Mini.

Several decades and a number of forays in to different racing championships with a number of different styles of racing Mini and I had learned a great deal about what makes the A-series engine perform. Both to the point of fragility and for long term reliability.

Applying that knowledge to a wide variety of customers needs furthered that knowledge and experience. So whether you need a scrupulously re-built standard engine for a classic restoration through to a competitive and reliable race engine, Calver Special Tuning has the capability to do it.
